President's Welcome Message

January 2024

As we approach the end of January, my first month as CBIC President has flown by. I was first certified in January 2008 and my involvement with CBIC progressed as a member of the test committee, writing, and reviewing test questions. I began my career in infection prevention and control in a large academic hospital and have since moved into public health and healthcare associated infection/antimicrobial resistant pathogen prevention.

To kick off the year, I joined CBIC Executive Director, Jessica Dangles, and APIC’s President, Tania Bubb, and APIC’s CEO, Devin Jopp at the American Society of Association Executives’ (ASAE) CEO Symposium. ASAE is a professional association that represents individuals who work in association management and administration. The symposium provides a platform for association leaders to gather, exchange insights, and discuss relevant issues facing their organizations. This is terrific training to plan for the year ahead. As we approach the third year of our strategic plan, I am committed to ensuring that anyone who wants to, has the opportunity to demonstrate competency through the different examinations we have.

2024 Initiatives

Work continues on the Advanced Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (AD-CIP).  Our dedicated group of subject matter experts meet regularly to develop this portfolio-based certification.  The APIC Competency Model will serve as the framework for this certification but will focus more on the outer circle of future- oriented competencies such as research, leadership, professional stewardship, IPC operations, etc. There will be a session on the AD-CIP at the upcoming APIC conference and the schedule for this conference will be available in the coming months. I look forward to seeing many of you at this in-person event. See the dedicated page on the CBIC website that will be updated as more information is available.

CIC® Recertification reminders

It’s never too early to start thinking about recertification. For CIC® certificants with a certification expiration date of December 31, 2024, important deadlines are approaching for recertification. If you are unsure when your CIC® certification expires, please email the CBIC staff, info@cbic.org. As a reminder, certificants have the option to recertify through Infection Prevention Units (IPUs) or examination.

Recertification by IPUs

To recertify through infection prevention units (IPUs) sign into your Profile and click on "My IPUs" tab on the top navigation panel. The $410 fee is required at the time of portfolio submission. The recertification IPU portfolio must be submitted by October 31, 2024. Once submitted, CBIC staff will review your portfolio within 30 business days. To learn more about recertifying through IPUs, please visit the CBIC website.

Recertification by Examination

The recertification examination application is available and may be accessed in your online profile. You are not required to submit any supporting documentation to take the examination, but staff will review your application and send your information to Prometric for you to gain access to the examination. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive access to the examination within five to seven business days.

The recertification examination must be purchased on or before November 30, 2024. Applications submitted after November 30, 2024, will not be accepted. The examination is not timed and is open book but must be taken independently. A passing score must be achieved, and your recertification examination must be completed by December 31, 2024, at 11:59 pm Greenwich Mean Time / 6:59 pm EST.

Looking Forward

I am honored to serve as CBIC’s 2024 President and to collaborate with our diverse board of directors. Below is a snapshot of our recent in-person meeting. I am thrilled to be working with this dedicated group of professionals and look forward to what 2024 brings!
