Established 30 years ago, IPAC Eastern Ontario (IPAC-EO) is a small but very active chapter of IPAC Canada. Our region extends from the beautiful 1000 islands, along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River and north into the lakes district of the area. Over the years our membership has fluctuated but has stabilized in recent years at approx. 90 members. The number of chapter members who are certified has increased steadily. In 2016 we have 27 certified members which represent 30% of our chapter membership who hold CIC® certification.
IPAC-EO has always recognized and reinforced CIC® as an indicator of a current knowledge base of IPAC best practices. In 1986 Lois Rae, a strong supporter of certification, became the first chapter member to become certified (CIC®). Lois passed away in January 2004 after a brave struggle with cancer. The chapter wanted to do something to honour Lois, while also continue her legacy of encouraging personal growth and promoting professionalism, so in 2007 The Lois Rae Memorial Fund was established. The purpose of the fund is to reimburse exam fees to chapter members upon successful completion of the CIC® exam. The monies awarded reimburse the exam fee for both successful first time certifiers and also chapter members who successfully re-certify. Any chapter member in good standing for at least one year is eligible to apply. To date (June 2016) approximately 20 chapter members have had exam fees returned from the fund. A portion of the proceeds from all educational conferences offered by the chapter is earmarked to maintain the reserve. Successful educational events and conferences over the past 9 years have allowed IPAC-EO to sustain the fund at a level sufficient to cover all eligible requests. We hope this is true for years to come.
In looking for other ways to acknowledge chapter members who recognize the importance of certification, the chapter now also presents a CIC® pin to all new first time certifiers at a chapter meeting following notification of successful certification. The pins, purchased by the chapter from the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC), are just another way to say congratulations and proudly tell the world that the member has earned their CIC®.
