The mission of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) is to create a safer world through prevention of infection. The association’s more than 15,000 members direct infection prevention programs that save lives and improve the bottom line for hospitals and other healthcare facilities. APIC advances its mission through patient safety, implementation science, competencies and certification, advocacy, and data standardization.
APIC was founded in 1972 by a pioneering group of infection control nurses who recognized the need for an organized approach to preventing healthcare-associated infections. APIC is now a multidisciplinary organization which serves more than 15,000 members in 48 countries.
In 1987, APIC founded CBIC to be the certifying body behind infection prevention and control. CBIC became accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and now APIC provides resources and support to current and future CICs. A new study bolsters support for the CIC® credential as it showed that IPs with certification in infection prevention and control (CIC®) are two to three times more likely to perceive the evidence behind certain infection prevention practices as strong, compared to their non-certified peers.
