1. Tell us about your experience putting together your portfolio for the AL-CIP?
Developing my AL-CIP portfolio was a structured and reflective process that translated my day-to-day infection prevention work into measurable leadership impact. I focused on high-risk priorities identified through a formal risk assessment and scoring system, and aligned my projects with system-level outcomes. Key components included CDI cluster investigations, surveillance optimization, and hand hygiene performance improvement initiatives.
I emphasized data integrity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustainability—demonstrating not only what was implemented, but how it changed practice and outcomes. The process strengthened my ability to connect frontline activities with strategic goals and organizational performance.
2. Can you provide tips for writing a successful rationale?
A strong rationale should clearly link the problem, the intervention, and the measurable impact. Start with a well-defined risk or gap supported by data, then explain why your chosen approach is evidence-based and context-appropriate. Focus on outcomes—not just activities—by including before-and-after metrics and system-level implications.
Keep it concise, structured, and aligned with organizational priorities. Most importantly, demonstrate leadership by highlighting decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability of the intervention
3. What advice would you give to someone considering the AL-CIP?
Approach AL-CIP as a leadership journey rather than a documentation exercise. Select projects where you can demonstrate real impact, not just participation. Build your portfolio around high-risk priorities and measurable outcomes, and engage multidisciplinary teams early.
Stay organized, align your work with strategic goals, and continuously reflect on how your actions influence system performance. The more you think like a leader, the stronger your portfolio will be.
4. What does earning your AL-CIP mean to you?
Earning the AL-CIP represents a significant milestone in my professional journey, recognizing my transition from operational practice to strategic leadership in infection prevention. It reflects my commitment to improving patient safety through data-driven decisions, system thinking, and sustainable change.
This achievement motivates me to continue advancing infection prevention practices and contributing to healthcare systems at a broader level.
