1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed my views on infection prevention and control, particularly in long-term care facilities. It has highlighted the crucial need for strict protocols, sufficient resources, and ongoing training to protect the health and safety of patients and staff. When I had the chance to work for my state's Department of Health during the pandemic, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't miss.

2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?

It's not an easy career, but knowing that you are making a difference and are responsible for the safety of patients and healthcare staff makes it worthwhile.

 3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?

It signifies my dedication to upholding the highest infection prevention and control standards. It demonstrates my expertise and commitment to patient and staff safety. The CIC certification has enhanced my professional credibility and empowered me to make a meaningful impact in healthcare.

4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?

I primarily studied using APIC resources and APIC text. I also attended the NICE Northeastern Infection Control Educators (NICE) course, which was beneficial.

5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?

Make sure to set aside time for studying. Start by getting comfortable with the aspects of infection prevention and control you're unfamiliar with, and then move on to your strengths. Consider partnering with someone or joining a study group. Remember that everyone's experience may differ from yours.

6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?

I attend webinars and conferences on infection prevention and control. As an active member of APIC, I regularly participate in meetings.

7. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?

The CIC certification has been crucial for my professional growth. It has enhanced my infection prevention and control expertise, leading to greater responsibilities. Being CIC certified has also facilitated networking and collaboration with other healthcare professionals, contributing to my continued development in the field. Overall, it has validated my skills and provided a framework for ongoing success in infection prevention and control.
