Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC®)

Mohamed Salem Mahmoud, RN, CIC

Location: Egypt
Company/Organization: King Salman Military Armed Forces Hospital
Title: Registered Nurse
First certified: June 2026

1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?

It bridges clinical practice with public health. It offers the unique ability to protect entire patient populations and healthcare staff simultaneously by designing systems that stop outbreaks before they start.

2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?

Build a strong clinical foundation first (like critical care or nursing), as it helps you understand how infections spread in real-world scenarios. Pair that clinical knowledge with a deep dive into microbiology, epidemiology, and quality improvement methodologies like Lean or Six Sigma.

3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?

It represents a gold standard of validation. It shows mastery of the core competencies of infection prevention, proving that your practice is backed by rigorous, evidence-based standards.

4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?

A dedicated, multi-month study plan (typically 5 to 6 months) focusing on a high volume of practice questions. Breaking down the rationale behind both correct and incorrect answers helps solidify core concepts like surveillance, sterilization, and outbreak investigation.

5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?

Be consistent and give yourself time. Treat the preparation as an investment in your daily practice rather than just an exam to pass, and focus heavily on understanding transmission dynamics and standard/transmission-based precautions.

6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?

By regularly tracking guidelines from major global bodies (like the CDC and WHO), actively participating in professional associations (like APIC or IPAC), reviewing peer-reviewed journals, and maintaining certification requirements.

7. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?

It opens doors to leadership roles, commands immediate respect from the multidisciplinary medical team, and positions you as a trusted subject matter expert who can influence hospital policy and patient safety initiatives.
