Title: Infection Prevention and Control Manager

First Certified: June 2018

1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?

My journey into Infection Prevention and Control began at the bedside in critical care. Working with post-cardiothoracic and cardiac patients, I witnessed how a single preventable infection could completely change a patient’s outcome. Over time, I realized that preventing harm before it happens has a greater impact than treating its consequences, and that became the turning point that led me into IPC.

2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?

Never see IPC as a checklist—it is a mindset. Spend time in clinical areas, understand workflow, and listen to frontline staff. The strongest IPC professionals are those who can translate science into practical, realistic actions that healthcare workers can apply every day.

3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?

The CIC® certification represents more than certification; it reflects accountability, trust, and a commitment to global standards in patient safety. It symbolizes a professional responsibility to uphold excellence in Infection Prevention and Control and to ensure that every decision is guided by evidence-based practice to protect patients, healthcare workers, and the healthcare environment.

4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?

I learned best by connecting guidelines to real practice. Instead of memorization, I focused on clinical scenarios from ICU and IPC work, which helped me understand the “why” behind every recommendation.

5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?

Start early, be consistent, and understand concepts deeply. Link every guideline to real patient care situations—you will retain knowledge better and apply it more effectively.

6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?

I stay current through continuous learning, reviewing APIC, CDC, and WHO updates, attending local and international infection prevention and control conferences and lectures, participating in multidisciplinary committees, and actively engaging in quality improvement and education programs within the hospital

7. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?

It strengthened my professional identity as an infection prevention leader and expanded my involvement in hospital governance and policy development. More importantly, it reinforced my commitment to patient advocacy and ensuring that every decision in healthcare prioritizes patient safety and evidence-based practice.
