1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?
After graduating from nursing school I started my career in pediatric Oncology Emergency. I was taught Fundamentals of infection control such as hand hygiene, waste segregation, aseptic technique etc. however I never received feedback on hand hygiene compliance rate. As result I didn’t relate the hand hygiene compliance and infection rate in those vulnerable papulation.
When the pandemic COVID-19 struck the world and everybody in the hospital and outside the hospital began to practicing social distancing, avoid unhygienic food consumption and use of alcohol based hand rub and face mask to prevent acquiring that deadly disease. These measure also led to a significant reduction in other infectious diseases. After that, I truly understood the impact and importance of infection prevention and control practices. Inspired by this realization, I decided to pursue a career in infection prevention and control.
2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?
I would advise to all those interested in infection prevention and control and wants to start career as Infection Preventionist / Practitioner. CBIC is the platform which gives you expertise, knowledge and helps you become subject matter expert. I highly recommend CIC certification if you are a mid-level career professional and APIC if you are novice in the field
3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?
Being CIC® certified means that I am committed to equipping myself with the latest knowledge and continuously updating my skills in line with current research and guidelines, as well as implementing evidence-based best practices to ensure the safety of patients and healthcare workers.
4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?
I prepared primarily using the APIC Textbook and the APIC Study Guide (6th Edition). I also utilized the CDC and WHO websites for in-depth information, and creating flashcards helped me memorize key concepts. Additionally, participating in social media group discussions with subject matter experts enhanced my understanding of the subject. These strategies helped me pass the exam on first attempt.
5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?
I would advise to create a study plan and remain consistent with it. Focus on understanding the concepts behind each topic rather than just memorizing information. Consistency is the key to success. Situations and circumstances may distract you, but stay committed to your goal of achieving certification. Wish you best of luck.
6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?
I stay up to date through continuous learning by attending webinars, seminars, and infection control workshops, as well as regularly reviewing new guidelines from the CDC, WHO or other regulatory agencies. Staying up to date is necessary to identify gaps in infection control practices and implement the latest evidence-based practices to safeguard patients and staff.
7. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?
CIC® has given me national and international recognition, enhanced the knowledge necessary for my role, and opened up better career opportunities for me.
