1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?
My journey began in 2015 when I was first exposed to the world of sterilization. Learning the fundamentals of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization opened my eyes to the critical role these processes play in patient outcomes. That initial exposure was the 'spark'—I realized that
preventing an infection is just as vital as treating one, and I’ve been dedicated to that mission ever since
2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?
Take that first step with a clear heart and a focused mind. This field isn't just a job; it’s a commitment to patient safety that requires courage, deep technical knowledge, and decisive action. It isn't always easy, but if you have a passion for leading and protecting others, start now. The field needs people who are ready to take action today.
3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?
To me, being a CIC® represents a lifelong dedication to the specialty. it is a 'gold standard' that validates your expertise. It means you possess the verified knowledge and clinical judgment necessary to lead an organization safely and effectively through complex public health challenges.
4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?
Consistency was key. I dedicated 30 to 60 minutes daily to webinars and focused on active learning. I made it a goal to answer and rationalize 50 to 100 practice questions a day. Understanding the 'why' behind every correct and incorrect answer is what truly prepared me for the actual exam scenarios.
5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?
Trust the process and stay disciplined. Don't just memorize facts; focus on how to apply them in a clinical setting. Surround yourself with a network of mentors or study groups, and remember that the certification is not just a test—it is a transformation of your professional identity.
6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?
I believe continuous learning is essential. I stay current by reviewing the latest research and APIC prevention strategies, attending international conferences, and participating in webinars. I also find great value in volunteering with AAMI committees, which allows me to contribute to the standards that shape our profession.
7. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?
Earning my CIC® has opened doors to leadership opportunities that were previously out of reach. It has shifted my role from a practitioner to a consultant and leader within my facility. Professionally, it has provided me with a seat at the table where high-level safety decisions are made, elevating my career trajectory significantly.
