Mary Lou Manning, PhD, CRNP, CIC, AL-CIP, FAPIC, FSHEA, FAAN

Mary Lou is a Professor at Thomas Jefferson University College of Nursing and  Director of the Center for Infection Prevention and Antibiotic Stewardship. Prior to joining Jefferson, she held leadership positions at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia including Director of Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health. Her work has had global impact, including developing IPC curricula and leading clinician training with the World Health Organization and American International Health Alliance.


She has led IPC initiatives in high-stakes settings worldwide - from serving as the only nurse on a post-tsunami disaster recovery team in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, to training healthcare workers deploying to West Africa during the Ebola outbreak at the request of the CDC. In 2020, she was tapped by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health to lead IPC program development for an alternative care site for COVID-19 patients.


A past President of APIC (2015) and former Board member, Mary Lou has authored more than 65 peer-reviewed articles and received numerous honors, including the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and APIC’s Distinguished Scientist and Carol DeMille Achievement Awards. She holds BSN and MSN degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD from Temple University, and is board certified in IPC (CIC) and Advanced Leadership (AL-CIP).


Committed to mentoring emerging IPC leaders, Mary Lou enjoys family time, leisurely Sunday brunch, and active travel. Her favorite recent adventures were walking a section of the Camino de Santiago in Portugal and Spain and hiking in Iceland.
