1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?

I initially stumbled into a career in infection prevention and control by accident. However, through team discussions and daily rounds, I came to understand the critical role that infection control practices play in ensuring patient care and safety. I now firmly believe that I have chosen the best career path, as infection prevention is essential in managing healthcare-associated infections, occupational injuries, and other related challenges effectively.

2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?

 I would advise someone interested in an infection prevention and control career to pursue their passion and stay updated with the latest developments in the field. This will help them gain confidence and excel in their chosen career path.
 

3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?

Being a CIC® is a proud achievement for me, symbolizing my commitment and passion in the field of infection prevention and control. It represents the realization of my dream in this important area of healthcare.

4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?

As a candidate from the Cayman Islands, I faced challenges in finding study materials for the initial certification examination due to limited access and shipping constraints. With no local chapter or study group available, I turned to online resources for support. I found a study group on LinkedIn and obtained an online APIC textbook, which proved to be instrumental in helping me successfully prepare for and pass the CIC exam. 

5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?

I would advise someone pursuing certification to set a timeframe for completing the certification process. Joining a recognized study group can provide motivation and support. Additionally, dedicating time to intensive study of the APIC textbook and demonstrating commitment to the process are top priorities for success.

6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?

I stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices by being a member of APIC and following infection prevention and control groups on social media. Additionally, regularly checking updates from reputable sources such as CDC and WHO helps me stay informed on the latest developments in the field.

7. How has being a CIC® helped you navigate the current COVID-19 climate?

While I was not a CIC® at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, my preparation for the certification has equipped me with valuable knowledge and skills that have been instrumental in navigating the challenges posed by the current climate.

8. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?

Obtaining my CIC® certification has been instrumental in my professional growth and career advancement. It has provided me with the confidence and empowerment to effectively communicate my suggestions and recommendations. As a member of various committees, I am able to guide my team using evidence-based practices to prevent infections and enhance patient safety.
