Partner Organizations & Collaborations

The Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC) collaborates with three similar organizations to spread the word about the importance of being certified in infection prevention and control (CIC®).

Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC)

APIC formed a committee in 1978 to establish goals and methods and in 1980, the Board approved education standards for certification. Later that year, the APIC Certification Association (APICCA) was formed. The following year, the APIC Certification Committee and APICCA worked together to develop an independent certification board, contract with a professional testing company, conduct the first job analysis of infection control practice, determine eligibility criteria and develop a recertification plan.

In 1982, APICCA changed its name to the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC). The organization is now called the Certification Board for Infection Control & Epidemiology (still CBIC) to reflect current practice, which encompasses applied epidemiology.

Now they are a partner of CBIC that provides educational materials for candidates internationally.

Infection Prevention and Control Canada (IPAC Canada)

IPAC Canada is a multidisciplinary association that promotes best practices in infection and control through education, standards, advocacy, and consumer awareness. IPAC started working with CBIC to provide resources for candidates in Canada and to promote certification in Canada.

Both APIC and IPAC Canada work closely with CBIC to provide guidance for their current and future CIC's. They also both have representation on the CBIC Board of Directors.

International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC)

IFIC is an umbrella organization of societies and associations of healthcare professionals in infection prevention and control. IFIC has representation from over 51 other countries. CBIC is a member of IFIC.
